Uniforum have, in general, done a very competent job of administering the co.za namespace since 1995, but really, isn't it time they made their registration system a little less...1995?
I can go to a US registrar and have my domain registered and paid for with a few clicks. Uniforum's system is archaic, clumsy, inefficient and hostile to non-techies. read more »

I Think Most People Would Want Faster Speeds But It Would Be Useless To Get A 8mb Line With A 3gig Cap. Many People Would Get Capped Within Hours , The Best Thing Would Be For Uncapped. Many People On 4mb Lines Are Spending Over R1000 Just On Line Rental And Isp Costs , But If Someone Offered Us A Uncaped 8mb Account With Line Included For R1500, Lets Just Say You'll Will Have A HUGE Response. If Just R100 People Take This You'll Will Get R150 000 But Since Hundred Is A Small Number What About 10,000? read more »

It would be very helpful for VPN's and mail servers if (for people who do not require the bandwidth) there was an option for static IP addresses on capped ADSL.

This is sort of a question-slash-idea, so if I'm horribly off the mark, feel free to burn me publicly, lol.
Local bandwidth is cheaper, meg for meg, than international bandwidth. Yet, local hosting is incredibly expensive in comparison to international hosting.
Why is this? Are there not enough servers hosted within SA borders? Licensing, technical, political, what? read more »

How many people would signup for IS packages if they offer 10GB for R200 (at a decent speed)?
OR
Free internet at off-peak times (including weekends).
I am sure, lot of people will opt for such packages.
So what stops IS or Telkom from providing such packages?
Wouldn't it be great if an ADSL user with a cap could pick say 5 web sites which would be excluded from their international cap?
Very much like the mobile operators do with 5 family/friends telephone numbers?
E.g.
facebook.com
youtube.com
etc?

Wifi Landing Page as Tourist Information Portal
Submitted by vincenthofmann on Mon, 13/10/2008 - 21:30.The idea is to utilize pre-existing IS Wifi landing pages as portals connecting tourists to services in their immediate surrounds. Utilizing the wifi hotspot to define the location of the individual and providing information related to that particular area.
Owing to the sudden popularity of locative social media applications branding a free wifi locative tourist community site would ultimately provide IS with an excellent opportunity to raise awareness for the possibilities of using its services. read more »

IS should offer hosting from Drupal and other open source applications.
Maybe also WordPress, Joomla, Mambo
International example:
http://www.siteground.com/
i think IS should offer voip over mobile phones using WLAN's
this will be a massive business - especially if we can control the media at the central AP
clearly, overflow to GSM voice mailbox will be essential

Far too many companies in SA that are either representatives of international brands, or are local country offices, have terrible local websites, or regularly just bounce you to US or UK pages (Canon SA, I'm looking at you), or don't have local sites (lazy, sloppy, bad marketing practice -- JVC (Nu World Distribution) you're worse than dismal). An amazing number of global brands have Web presence for any number of teeny countries, but not SA. read more »

If IS could offer a local paid newsserver ala giganews, with a decent sized cache (3 or 4 terabytes should suffice) there will definately be a market for it in South Africa. I know a lot of people that currently download via international newsservers, would much rather utilise local bandwidth. Given that these are already paid newsserver solutions, it would not cost us out of pocket (assuming the service costs are in line with international norm... say R250/month). read more »

IS Hotspot Wifi Authentication via 802.1x
Submitted by gregdechasteauneuf on Thu, 04/06/2009 - 10:25.It would be cool if IS hotspots would allow me to stay authenticated without having to go to the landing page each time. Great for mobile phone access. Also IS should allow me to authenticate with my ADSL login and deplete my CAP when I am in a hotspot.
This is a little bit of an obscure idea, but its something I would really like to see. A platform to investigate high bandwidth utilization applications. Basically, as we move forward networks are getting bigger, bandwidths are growing, and with the Seacom cable and other international cables starting to emerge, and the potential granting of ECNS licenses to various players, the bandwidth situation could (hopefully drastically) change. Now, at the moment we sit in a situation where we are looking to reduce bandwidth usage, and we spend much of our time investigating bringing down bandwidth usage. How about starting to look at the future of possible high speed links, and looking for applications for these services that would be profitable, useable and could actually take use of high speed infrastructure. read more »

IS should allow hosting clients in their IDC's to choose who they want their bandwidth providers to be. IS should create meet-me rooms in their IDC's where other providers can host equipment making connectivity to any ISP literally just a VLAN or cable patch
